Welcome to MacArthur Elementary School

January 24, 2020

Dear teachers, parents, and families:

I am Twyla Waterson, principal of MacArthur Elementary School. I have served here for the last seven years of my 19 years working with Tulsa Public Schools. MacArthur stands ready to welcome the Jones community.

In the summer of 2019, MacArthur was remodeled, adding a secure entry as well as a new wing that seconds as a FEMA shelter. The entire building has been renovated and updated. The new wing added seven additional childhood classrooms, which provides extra space to accommodate incoming students.

The mission of MacArthur Elementary is to develop students who excel as lifelong learners, both academically and socially, and who develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to help them succeed in life.

We are a Positive Behavior Intervention Support School, where we focus on elevating the positive in each child as well as teaching students how to interact in a positive manner. Using rigorous curriculum along with supporting teachers to develop greater conceptual understanding and richer instruction, we provide a meaningful learning experience for all our students. At MacArthur, we reward positive behavior through concentrated effort to recognize the positive things students do instead of highlighting the negative.

Through a grant from Youth at Heart, we offer a free 21st Century Continued Learning Club that provides homework help, free tutoring, and high-interest clubs like gardening and bike club after school from 2:30-5 p.m., with a light meal included. Through the Reading Partners program, children are paired with community volunteers who work with students on a one-on-one basis. In addition, through other business and faith-based partners, food baskets, backpacks, and other services are available for families in need.

The MacArthur PTA has connected with the Jones PTA working together to find ways to accommodate incoming families. In fact, on January 16, they hosted a joint movie night at MacArthur for all students. They are working on additional events for the remainder of the school year. Please stay tuned for upcoming events.

Additionally, we have begun planning joint professional development for MacArthur and Jones facility and staff. New MacArthur staff will be invited to join the PBIS retreat this summer.

We are excited and look forward to welcoming our new classmates and staff in the 2020-2021 school year!
